Thursday, July 5th: Going-to-the-sun-road Part 1 … where is the screaming downhill?

There were two reasons not to cycle to the top: first of all, my boss is soooooooooooo out of shape, and secondly she does not dare to cycle alone early in the morning (those big animals). Luckily the park has a new system: they shuttle hikers up! And guess what – even a bicycle can go on the little van. The big busses go only as far as avalanche creek. There you have to transfer to a smaller van. The driver was a very friendly and very talkative woman who had retired from the army serving intelligence in Germany. My boss got the front seat next to her – so she got to know a lot. It was probably the first time we ever drove the Going-To-The-Sun road. Even that’s an experience: the right side of the car is so close to the drop off. In 12 miles we climb 3000 ft along this road which has only one switchback. Bicycles have to be at the top by 11 am. They are allowed to go down anytime! As we neared the pass, we saw mountain goats jumping around. The plan is something to be changed and that’s what happened again: there was still so much snow that it was impossible to hike to Hidden Lake.

Just a couple of days ago a Park Ranger slid down a slope while she was clearing some parts of a trail. We did walk for a kilometer until the grade became too steep: my boss was wearing sneakers, which make a perfect board to slide on! After spending some time at the top it was time to climb on the Sweet Machine and head down.

We did miss that little bit of enthusiasm – we didn’t actually deserve to cycle down. But still, this was better than going down in a van. At least my boss had some cycling to do – once at the bottom of the alley, next to Mc. Donald creek.
