Wednesday, August 8th: Big Rock Candy, UT … Where’s the candy?

After turning in the key of the room, my boss wanted to start out when I told her:”Hey… your brains!” No cycling without helmet! The road to Elsinore takes us along fields with crops. Suddenly I hear this roaring noise and I gaze up to the sky: it’s the Red Baron!

Well, almost… someone is flying around over the fields, spraying them with I don’t know what. My boss tells me this brings her thoughts to the movie “North by Northwest”, with Gary Grant – the scene where the biplane is attacking him on the country roads. Hmm… that doesn’t sound very good to me. Keep going, woman, away from this plane! From Elsinore we can cycle on the bicycle path – there are hardly any cars here, but there is a cycling path.
Elsinore

Wonder what's behind the sign of Las Vegas?

Kids on their bicycles with 4 dogs come up to us. The last dog – a Basset Hound – has a hard time keeping up with the other ones – poor guy! At the junction of US 89 we take a short break – my boss empties a bottle of vitamin water. For the next couple of days we’ll be cycling on US 89 again – a deceiving route: it looks as if we go downhill, but it is mostly uphill. After crossing the Sevier river my woman suddenly shrieked, her feet going up in the air while cycling! What’s going on? Well, she just cycled over this 40 cm long, narrow, wriggling snake… It was hurrying to get away and she just couldn’t cycle around it anymore. I asked her to go back and look at it… but she wouldn’t! No pictures of it!
As we follow the Sevier river upstream, we cut along these big mountains around us.

Sometimes the shoulder gets a bit narrow, but the traffic is not heavy. I can see my human is working hard – probably a day of laziness too many? It’s midday when we reach the Big Rock: yellow and red it stands out between the other green ones. But candy??? Only the Twix my boss bought in the evening!

The short ride compels my human to go for a run in the afternoon, while I stay in the shade of the cabin next to the river. When she returns – sweaty all over – she doesn’t seem to walk as easily anymore: stiff muscles, she tells me! What did you think, woman, after three lazy days???
